Redcliffe is the oldest European settlement in Qld, being the location of a convict prison in 1824. They did not have enough water, so soon moved to what is now Bris Vegas.
This Stroll is within the Redcliffe CBD, exploring the area around the beach and what used to be Humpybong Creek – long since buried under parks & gardens. Our way is based on the convict and early settler heritage trails, though without the long stops reading from The Bible - I have learnt my lesson and nolonger delay with long readings. Our path is the combination of 2 trails.
You will investigate the beach area first, then follow the convict trail which shows where the original buildings were – like the prison and the military camp, and some early down-to-earth places that kept the camp alive. Lack of fresh water killed the site – Humpybong Creek just wasn’t big enough.
The second half is along the main drag – Redcliffe Pde, where the early businesses were and some of the buildings still exist – though heavily disguised.
There is the possibility of moving faster than expected and catching an earlier bus to Kippa Ring.
Come with me on this short adventure to learn more about our early history.
Did you know that in 1827, a separate colony of North Australia was signed-off by Queen Vicki to be set up at Port Curtis (now Gladstone) while the Moreton Bay Settlement was only a part of NSW for the worse convicts. Convicts & soldiers were dispatched, only to find the land not suitable so all went home to Sydney.
