BRISBANE CATHOLIC BUSHWALKING CLUB

FRIDAY 1 – MONDAY 4 MAY, 2026, KWIAMBAL, BASE CAMP

Cost$110-$140 + travel

Kwiambal National Park is an isolated National Park well west of the Great Dividing Range in an area we rarely visit. It is a five hour drive from Brisbane travelling via Texas and then into Northern NSW. It is a lovely secluded place bordered by the Macintyre and the Severn Rivers. The Severn flows into the Macintyre in the northern end of the park. It is an area of cypress pine woodlands and ironbarks. There are several lookouts over dramatic granite gorges and two waterfalls.

The park has a range of walks from very short to medium (most are quite easy walks). I am also planning on Saturday to do an off-track walk along one or both of the rivers. I  will be organising another leader to do less demanding walks on that day for those wanting something easier. I am planning this base camp to cater for the full range of walkers, from short strolls to longer walks. The May Day weekend  basecamp we had at Mt Kaputar this year was a very relaxed and convivial occasion, I anticipate that Kwiambal will also be like that. On Sunday, those that did the off- track walk on Saturday would join the rest of the walkers and do the easier walks in the park. We would all drive back to Brisbane on Monday.

The accommodation options are:

Lavender Vale Cottage, sleeps up to 8. Double and single beds. There is electricity, full kitchen, spacious living and dining areas, shower, toilet, slow combustion wood heater (& air conditioning).

At the moment the Lavender Vale Homestead is unavailable but if a contract cleaner is able to be engaged we would be able to stay there as well. It provides everything the cottage does and sleeps up to 20 (though it would still be a very reasonable cost if only 10 were staying).

Camping options are:

the smaller and probably quieter Kookibitta Campground or:

the larger Lemon Tree Flat Campground where we could book the group booking camp site which takes up to 15 people. The group booking site is quite large and can take caravans, camper trailers and tents. If we had 10 of us camping there, the cost per person for the three nights would be $18.45 (half the cost of usual individual bookings). There is an undercover eating and cooking area with gas barbecues.

Both camp grounds are a few minutes drive from the cottage and homestead. The cottage and homestead are quite close to each other.

To make sure I secure the booking for our spots on the May Day long weekend, I will be making the bookings in early November this year. I have placed this advance notice so I can get some idea of interest.
